Acid mine drainage will be extracted from underground settlers using pumps to the treatment plant which will be on surface. The acidic water will be treated to remove heavy metals then pumped to the water softening stage before going to the reverse osmosis membrane for brine removal. The product of the reverse osmosis unit is the drinkable water as it has been tested using the prototype.
The residual slag contains a considerable amount of gypsum which is currently saleable and this will help to reduce the operating costs of the plant.

PROBLEM STATEMENT:

Water is currently a scarce resource in South Africa and the depletion rate threatens our water sources. It is expected that this country of ours will be without water in the next 10 years therefore this requires a sense of urgency to find innovative processes of water treatment. Acid mine drainage is water which is available underground in the mining industry but toxic and therefore not drinkable at this stage.
The mines have spent a significant amount of money to pump out the acidic water underground and have also resorted in paying punitive fines for non-compliance of the environmental regulations.
